Canvas New Quizzes:

What you need to know

There are two quiz engines in Canvas, New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes. New Quizzes is the updated quiz engine which brings a wider range of functionality and is being actively developed as the replacement for Classic Quizzes. With Classic Quizzes being phased out, the Learning Technology Support team will begin migrating quizzes across from Semester 2/Trimester 3.

When working in your courses, you will be using the New Quizzes interface. This guide outlines common questions regarding quizzes.

Top 3 things to know:

What’s changed

In Classic Quizzes, clicking Edit on a quiz opened the settings and questions on one screen. In New Quizzes, clicking the quiz title shows an assignment summary page only. The full quiz editor — including questions, settings, moderation, and reports — is accessed by clicking Build.

What to do now

Click Build to access:

  • Questions
  • Settings
  • Moderate (extensions, attempts)
  • Reports

Key takeaway: To edit or manage a quiz in New Quizzes → click the ‘Build’ button

What’s changed
  • Question Banks have been replaced with Item Banks
  • Item Banks are linked to your user account, not just a course — they are available across all your courses
  • They can be shared and reused across courses, with colleagues having view or edit access
  • Questions stay linked to the bank (not copied), so updates to a question apply across all quizzes that use it
  • Item Banks are not automatically copied when a course is copied

Managing Item Banks — two ways to access:

  • View (read-only): From the quiz builder, use the Item Bank button to browse and pull questions into a quiz. You can see banks shared with you but cannot edit them from here.
  • Edit (manage): While in the quiz editor (Build), open the ⋯ three-dot menu and select Manage Item Banks. This is where you create, edit, delete, and share banks.
What to do now
  • When building a quiz, use the Item Bank button in the quiz editor to add questions from a bank
  • To create or manage banks, go to Build → ⋯ three-dot menu → Manage Item Banks
  • To share a bank with a colleague or course, open the bank from Item Banks and use the Share option to assign view or edit access
  • If you need to migrate existing Question Banks, you can contact the Learning Technology Support team for assistance

Key takeaway: Item Banks are central, reusable, and shareable — manage them via the three-dot menu in the quiz editor, and add questions from them using the Item Bank button

What’s changed

In Classic Quizzes, students could not see results, correct answers, or feedback after submitting unless you explicitly enabled it. In New Quizzes, the default when creating a new quiz is that students can see their full results immediately after submitting. This is easy to adjust before publishing.

Note: setting a manual grade posting policy in the Gradebook does not hide quiz results in New Quizzes — students can still see their results by clicking into the quiz directly. The result visibility setting inside the quiz is what controls this.

What to do now

When creating a new quiz, check the result visibility setting before publishing:

  • Go to Build → Settings
  • Enable Hide results from students
  • Choose what information you want students to see

Key takeaway: For newly created quizzes, review and adjust the result settings to match what level of feedback you want released

Creating a Quiz

To create a quiz in Canvas, click the Quizzes link in the Global Navigation Menu, and select the Add Quiz button. Once the quiz is created you can place the quiz in context within the relevant module.

Assign to

The Assign to area, is where the due date, available from and available until dates and times are set.

Important! In Canvas, attempts in progress will be automatically submitted once the available until date/time passes, regardless of how much time remains on the time. Students must allow themselves sufficient time for their attempt.

If one or more students are required to attempt the quiz on another date, you can click the ‘+ Add’ button to configure dates for the specific student(s).
