Canvas Catalog

Canvas Catalog

Canvas Catalog is a 'shopfront' for Canvas courses, enabling courses to be available to participants external to the University. The University has a Canvas Catalog that can list  courses where non-UON students can sign up to and participate in a Canvas course.

The courses can be 'listed' which means the course will be available on the University's Canvas Catalog page and searchable or 'hidden' which means the course will have a unique link associated with it, and this link will need to be sent to participants to enrol. There is the option of charging for participation in a Canvas Catalog course and courses can have a completion certificate for when students complete the course.

Canvas Catalog courses can be offered as part of a 'program' of courses. This means participants can enrol in a 'program' and work through each individual Canvas Catalog course as part of the overall program.

Things to consider...

  • Content - Canvas courses are best where there is a linear flow of content and participation is encouraged and required. Think about engaging, linear content to make the most of your Canvas Catalog course. What tools will you need in the course and are they licensed for external users, and remember to ensure the course content is copyright compliant.
  • Tools - We encourage active learning in your Catalog course. When building active learning content consider the use of freely available options that will be able to be maintained over time. The use of available technologies will be limited due to licensing restrictions. Examples include Turnitin and Course Readings.
  • Moderation - Will the course be facilitated or is it self-paced? Who will moderate the course? Will you have discussions and quizzes? Will there need to be feedback to participants in the course? Who will be responsible for this? Who can prospective participants reach out to if they have questions about the course prior to enrolment?
  • Course duration - How long do you want the course to run? When should enrolments open and close?
  • Cost - Is there a cost associated with the course? How much is the enrolment costing? Have you got a cost collector and is your Finance Business Partner aware? Please note that paid courses may incur an additional per user fee from Canvas.
  • Completion certificate - Do participants get a completion certificate when they fulfil the requirements of the course? What requirements must they complete for the certificate to be generated? Has the Marketing & Communications team approved the certificate?

How do I get a Canvas Catalog course?

Approval is required to obtain a Canvas Catalog course. You will require Head of School (or equivalent) approval to request the site and requests will be lodged for final approval with PVC Education and Innovation or delegate. If there is a cost associated with the course LDTI will raise a request with Financial Services for payments to be allocated to the cost collector. Fill out the Canvas Catalog request form to request your Canvas Catalog course. On approval, LDTI will provide the Canvas course shell.

New to Canvas or want to start building a draft version? You can request a Canvas Sandbox site to get started.
