CHMW Clinical Conjoint pilot promotions process (2026)

In 2026, the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing (CHMW) has introduced a Clinical Conjoint pilot promotions process. This pilot design responds to feedback provided by clinical conjoints and allows greater flexibility for Honorary staff in clinical roles.

Eligibility: holders of Honorary Clinical Appointments, or Honorary Conjoint appointments with a clinical role, who also meet the eligibility to apply for academic promotion.

Step 1 Intention to Apply Form

As part of the 2026 pilot, the Intention to apply for Honorary Clinical Conjoint Promotion online form (time required 10 mins) can be submitted at any time throughout the year. The cover page provides further information and links to University of Newcastle promotion policies and procedures.

Submitting an Intention to Apply does not commit you to submitting a promotion application. It simply enables an eligibility review (and if eligible) access to the Academic Promotion 2026 application materials. Applicants who are ineligible to apply will be notified.

Step 2 Application Documents and Discipline Endorsement

Applicants who are confirmed as eligible to apply for promotion will be sent the 2026 Academic Promotion application materials (Clinical Conjoint Promotion Application Form and Discipline Endorsement Form; and for Level E applications, the additional Promotion Portfolio.) Before submitting an application, the applicant must make an appointment to meet with the relevant Discipline Lead, Clinical Dean or approved discipline representative (see resource document Application Endorsement). The purpose of the meeting is to discuss:

  1. the applicant’s contribution to the discipline;
  2. the level sought;
  3. evidence against the Clinical Conjoint criteria;
  4. readiness for promotion;
  5. whether the application should proceed to Head of School review.

Step 3 Application Submission

Once the discipline endorsement has been obtained and the Discipline Endorsement Form is complete, the applicant is responsible for submitting the Clinical Conjoint Promotion application package to the relevant email address.1

The application package must include:

  1. Clinical Conjoint Promotion Application Form;
  2. current curriculum vitae;
  3. certified copies of relevant qualifications;2
  4. Discipline Endorsement Form; and
  5. for Level E applicants only, the Promotion Portfolio and nominations for Independent Assessors required under this Procedure.

Following receipt of the complete application package, the School Office will arrange a meeting between the applicant and the Head of School or approved delegate.

All other Honorary appointees

Including: Conjoints not in clinical roles, Adjunct and Honorary appointees will continue to follow the Academic Promotions process.

Applications are now closed for 2026 and will reopen in May 2027.
