TAS wins 2018 SEC National Final

Following a year of outreach events across Australia, the 2018 Science and Engineering Challenge (SEC) National Final was recently held in Humpty Doo (Northern Territory). Eight high schools gathered in the Top End to compete in a variety of STEM activities, with many schools making the most of their trip by visiting local Darwin attractions during their stay.

SMART starts 2018 with Little Bang Discovery Club

The SMART program started 2018 off with a series of exciting school holiday science sessions. At Rutherford, Salamander Bay and Raymond Terrace libraries, junior scientists got hands on at Little Bang Discovery Club sessions. Children honed their skills in measuring, categorising and hypothesising to explore scientific principles like fluid dynamics and the physics of sound, vibration and magnets!

The University of Newcastle’s innovative Science and Engineering Challenge has attracted a $100,000 grant from the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer’s office to run events and give regional schools access to exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities.

SMART continues to expand in Northern NSW

The SMART Program was excited to welcome six new presenters to the team in May: Adam, Erin, Elyse, Hayden, Kelly and Sharni, who now join Charlotte, Laura, Nathan and Stephanie! Our presenters enjoyed connecting with families, educators and service providers at the 5th annual ‘You’re Kidding Me Expo’ in Glendale on May 17th.

SMART off to a rolling start in 2017!

SMART finished off 2016 with a bang, presenting more than a dozen of our Best of SMART Liquid Nitrogen Shows for prospective University students on campus - maybe one day they will be presenting these shows! We also farewelled Sarah Pilgrim, SMART Team Leader for 2015-2016, who is on her way to becoming a secondary teacher.

The Challenge is pleased to announce a continuing partnership with Google (Sydney) that will bring them further into the Computer Science space! Google has generously donated ten EV3 robot kits, laptops and carry cases, as well some initial training for the team by Sally-Ann Williams and Marie Efstathiou.
