Early Childhood Music Program
Early Childhood Music (ECM) at the Conservatorium cultivates a love of music in a fun and gentle environment. Children from ages 0-12 participate in a range of musical experiences and sound exploration through play. Music is great tool for building emotional development, body awareness, social skills and a sense of self. No prior musical experience is necessary, but we encourage you to bring a sense of curiosity and your dancing shoes! We have four dedicated ECM classes – ECM, Don’t Fret, Sound Foundations and Mini Musos. Please read on for more information.
Support and active involvement from parents is encouraged to ensure the best outcomes for each child and to build the parents’ capacity and confidence with regards to using music at home. Classes are held weekly in Room CON102.
Why use music?
Music uses all areas of the brain, linking emotional, sensory-motor, and cognitive processes. Music encourages neuroplasticity in developing brains and serves as both a verbal and non-verbal form of communication. Children can express thoughts, ideas, and emotions and explore musical elements such as volume, speed and tone. Music is both engaging and enjoyable, making skill development fun in a nurturing, supportive, group environment. On a physiological level, music can slow respiration and heart rate, reducing stress and anxiety.
What is music therapy?
Music therapy is the purposeful use of music by a Masters-trained professional to help individuals achieve specific goals. Backed by research and guided by a code of ethics, registered music therapists (RMTs) focus on improving health, functioning, and overall well-being. Unlike music education or entertainment, music therapy is goal-oriented and therapeutic in nature.
