Postgraduate coursework in Environmental Management is undertaken in an integrated program comprising Graduate Certificate (http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/11699.html), Masters (http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/11700.html)and Masters (Honours)(http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/11701.html) programs.

The program aims to produce graduates with the capability to constructively engage with the complex environmental concerns that confront contemporary societies. It emphasises the integration of theory and practice and provides an interdisciplinary grounding in sustainability, environmental management, impact assessment and policy. On completion of the program, the graduate will have a goood understanding of the key approaches in environmental management and decision-making, and well developed problem solving skills. the program is open to graduates from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. It caters for both mid-career professionals wishing to gain a postgraduate qualification, upgrade and extend skills and knowledge, or move into the environmental field, and suitably qualified graduates from cognate fields.

During this program, you'll study contemporary environmental issues from practical and theoretical perspectives. Developing a sound understanding of the key approaches in environmental management and decision-making, you'll expand your critical appreciation of sustainability, ethics, governance and cultural difference in relation to environmental practice and management.

Back to topAdmission Requirements

Applications for admission are assessed initially on the basis of a relevant undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 4.0. The degree, or the major undertaken in that degree, needs to be in one of the following areas:

  • conservation studies,
  • environmental rehabilitation studies,
  • forestry,
  • geography (human and physical),
  • marine,
  • resource and environmental management,
  • policy studies,
  • social ecology,
  • environment studies
  • urban and regional planning.

If you do not satisfy these criteria you are still encouraged to apply. Your application will be assessed on the basis of 'admission points' as described in the Additional Selection Criteria. The Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management requires 60 admission points.

Additional Selection Criteria:
  • Alternative entry will be assessed on the basis of the admission points scheme as described below.

    • An incomplete undergraduate degree or equivalent from an approved institution (with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or greater):Up to 50 points depending on number of units successfully completed.
    • An AQF approved diploma or Associate Diploma or equivalent from an approved institution: Up to 50 points (50 points for a relevant area;

    30 points for a non-relevant area)

    • Approved professional qualifications: Up to 50 points.
    • Relevant work experience:20 points per year (maximum 60 points)
    • Related area of research or management project completed with appropriate documentation: Up to 50 points
    • Statement of professional aims and achievements and/or interview: Up to 20 points

    • An overseas qualification from an approved institution equivalent to an undergraduate degree, Diploma, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma will be allocated the appropriate admission points as specified above.

Credit may be granted for coursework courses if they can be demonstrated to be directly equivalent in terms of content and depth of study to the corresponding courses in the environmental management program, and they were completed within the previous 5 years. Credit will be granted by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and IT in accordance with the Rules Governing Postgraduate Coursework Awards.

International students are advised that a majority of this program is only available on-line or by distance learning with only the Environmental Management Project available on-campus. International Students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English Language Proficiency requirements. Consequently, no additional strategies in relation to English language beyond those provided by the University should be required.

The support structures of the Student Support Unit will be available to assist any students with a disability or chronic illness. The Faculty accepts responsibility, in liaison with the Student Support Unit, for providing reasonable accommodations to allow students with disabilities to complete the program.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will draw on the assistance and support provided by the Wollotuka Indigenous Support Unit.

The program can be completed over six months full time or up to 2 years part-time. Courses are offered on a semester basis, and most on-line courses are offered on a trimester basis. On-line students may commence studies in January, May or September.

The Graduate Certificate program comprises four courses (40 units) consisting of at least three Group A directed courses (30 units), and up to one Group B directed courses (10 units).

Students who have satisfactorily completed the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management may proceed to the Master of Environmental Management with full credit for courses completed.
