Newcastle dominates Eastern University Games
Friday, 11 July 2014
An impressive gold medal haul on the final day of competition saw the University of Newcastle eclipse closest rivals, University of Technology Sydney (UTS), to claim the 2014 Eastern University Games (EUG) Overall Champion trophy yesterday.
The host side boasted a final medal tally of 10 gold, five silver and four bronze after dominating the podium during the four-day event, which showcased the sporting prowess of more than 3,200 competitors from NSW, the ACT and New Zealand. The Australian College of Physical Education was crowned the Per Capita champion, while the University of Wollongong's efforts earned the Spirit of the Games title.
The Australian University Championship of Surfing was also held concurrently with the EUG. In yet another outstanding display by Newcastle, Merewether's Jake Sylvester scored gold in the men's shortboard category, while Celia Waterfield was also victorious in the women's bodyboard division.
Last night's closing ceremony was attended by a 150-strong crowd at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium, where the city officially handed over duties to next year's EUG host, Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.
