Description
The Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepeneurship/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is a 400 unit Bachelor (Honours) degree. The Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship prepares students with the academic knowledge and practical experience needed to become highly competitive in rapidly changing regional, national and global economies and communities. Embedding business, innovation and entrepreneurial knowledge into a combined degree program with practical experiences gives students a substantial edge when applying for jobs in both the public and private sectors.
The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is strongly complementary with its focus on real-world skills. Students will receive in-depth training in legal research techniques, and be equipped with advanced skills suitable for high-level legal research work or further academic study. Given the extensive regulation that applies to businesses and corporations in general, general, and to innovative business environments in particular, a law degree is a highly valued and useful asset within the business sector.
After completing the Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepeneurship, students are automatically transferred into the Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Diploma of Legal Practice Program for their fourth and fifth years of study. To opt out of this automatic transfer, students are required to contact programadvice@newcastle.edu.au.
Students in the accredited Diploma of Legal Practice Program complete legal practice modules and practical legal training at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre and in placements with external organisations.
Domestic students who commence full time in Semester 2 should expect to complete the program in a minimum of 5.5 years.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Effective advanced oral and written communication skills to provide professional advice to employers, government and individual clients.
- Skills to be able to work individually or in teams.
- Critical thinking and analytical problem solving skills to analyse and solve legal problems and issues in innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Knowledge of theory, models and concepts relevant to Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Law.
- Proficiency in the utilisation of information and technology in business
- Business skills that incorporate understanding of ethical, economic, regulatory and global perspectives

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. - 150 units of core courses for the Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- 160 units of core courses for the Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
- 80 units from the LAWS course list

Transition arrangements
Changes to Law Directed Courses - 2021
Some 5000 Level LAWS Directed courses have been replaced with 6000 Level LAWS Directed courses in 2021. All 5000 and 6000 Level LAWS Directed courses completed prior to 2021 will continue to count toward completion of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program.
Changes to Law Core Courses - 2020
From 2020, the following Law core courses have been replaced as listed below:
- LAWS1001A and B replaced with LAWS1010 legal System and Method I and LAWS1020 Torts I
- LAWS2001A and B replaced with LAWS2030 Criminal Law and Procedure and LAWS4001 Consitutional Law
- LAWS3001A and B replaced with LAWS3040 Contracts I and LAWS3041 Contracts II

Honours
Honours is embedded in the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program. All students who successfully complete the program will graduate with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). Students who excel in their studies will have access to graded Honours, which will be calculated according to the University's policy. The policy is available here. Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
