School of Nursing and Midwifery
Frequently asked questions
The University of Newcastle offers a Bachelor of Midwifery. It also offers a Master of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) program. Both programs lead to registration as a midwife. Each program of study requires students to complete a least ten continuity of care experiences with women and birthing people. Students should attend at least four antenatal (pregnancy) visits. If possible, they should attend the baby's birth, and at least two postnatal (after birth) visits. A midwife or obstetrician should supervise all visits.
Evidence shows that continuity of care experiences enhance midwifery student learning. It is a positive experience for women and birthing people through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. Women enjoy student support. They look forward to student visits. They also look forward to developing a trusting professional relationship of care.
We know that it is your pregnancy and birth, a very important event in your life. If you decide at any time that you no longer want to engage in the student continuity of care experience, please let your midwife or obstetrician know as soon as possible. We will ensure that the student is not present at any of your future visits or the birth. The choice not to have a student follow your journey with you, will not affect your maternity care in any way.
Please let the midwife or obstetrician who is taking care of you know that you want a midwifery student to provide continuity of care. The following contacts are available:
Please contact the midwifery educators in the table below by email. They work at the health service where you are receiving care.
