2024 has again presented the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program with incredible opportunities to deepen and strengthen relationships with our partners in China and build on the findings of the reviews undertaken in 2023.
Professor Kent Anderson 2024 Foreword by Professor Kent Anderson
As we commenced the seventh year of the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program, we were inspired to celebrate the commendations and implement the recommendations from the Program’s second Triennial Review which was completed in 2023, to renew the Program and continue to develop globally aware and socially conscious leaders of tomorrow.
This Annual Report highlights the numerous opportunities Scholars have embraced to create positive change and amplify their leadership and university journeys. The strong bonds of friendship within the Ma & Morley family place this Scholarship apart from others, reflecting the impact the relationship between Ken Morley and Jack Ma continues to have, both locally and internationally. The power of connection, generosity and building understanding between people is crucial in these tumultuous times. Our Scholars have a responsibility to listen to and understand each other, live their values, challenge the status quo and create a better future.
The University is very grateful to our generous partners. We would like to thank Mr & Mrs Ma, the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Group for enabling this Program to contribute to a more innovative and sustainable world. We are honoured to be working in partnership with Jason Pau, Maggie Zhou, Beth Yu and the teams at the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Group to support Scholars in creating a fairer, safer, more respectful and more sustainable world.
It was wonderful to welcome 20 Hangzhou Normal University students to Newcastle in February and then reconnect with them in-person in Hangzhou in June. We look forward to further deepening this relationship in 2025, as the University of Newcastle celebrates its 60th Anniversary.
We would also like to acknowledge the feedback, guidance and counsel provided by our Ma & Morley Scholarship Program Advisory Committee members across the year, as well as the many University stakeholders from all Colleges and Divisions that give generously of their time and expertise to engage with and contribute to the ongoing success of the Program.
Together, we will continue to look ahead, embrace opportunities, solve challenges and deliver the future we imagine.
Professor Kent Anderson Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Global The University of Newcastle
Jarrod McEwen-Young
This scholarship has pushed me out of my comfort zone and really challenged my ideas, my beliefs, and really put me in the spotlight to try new things. I've become more confident, become more willing to try new things and meet new people. I hope to keep growing as a person, as I'm not a finished product yet, but I think I'm on the right path to keep on going and hopefully be the man that I want to be one day.
