Student and Ambassador Achievements

Ma & Morley Scholars earn their place in the Program by demonstrating their commitment to the values of the Program. They are dedicated to taking an active role in improving the world around them and consciously progressing their competency as global leaders. Here are just some of the outstanding actions and achievements of the Ma & Morley Scholars outside of the Program in 2024.

    • Jacob Carson (2021 Scholar) was re-elected as the Undergraduate Student Member on the University of Newcastle Council and placed first in four of his subjects in the Newcastle School of Law and Justice in 2024: Commercial Law, Administrative Law, Civil Dispute Resolution (Civil Procedure) and Professional Conduct. Jacob was also a finalist for Law Student of the Year in the Australian Law Awards.
    • Emma Dubos (2022 Scholar) was a member of the Institute for Regional Futures’ Hunter Youth Panel and attended the Business Hunter Nexus dinner with The Honourable Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia. Emma also presented to the Newcastle Youth Mock Council in August, sharing her experience at the Parramatta Family Court’s Women’s Shelter, how to connect to your passions and make a difference in your community to local school students.
    • Jai Briggs-Ford (2022 Scholar) spoke at the Vice-Chancellor’s Student Welcome, sharing his journey to and in university, the racism suffered by him and his family in Moree and Port Stephens, the support received from the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program and Wollotuka Institute, and the positive generational impact his degree in Medicine will create for his community.
    • Caitlin Ping (2022 Scholar)and Paycee Cubby (2022 Scholar) spoke at the inaugural “Support Your Student” evening: a welcome event for parents and supporters of new students. Paycee was also a Master of Ceremonies at the University’s Gifting Day and Reconciliation Ball.
    • Tanika Ridgeway (2021 Scholar) was the Master of Ceremonies at the Program’s Welcome Lunch
    • Tom Somogyi (2021 Scholar) was the Master of Ceremonies at the Ma & Morley Gala
    • Maddison Battese (2021 Scholar) addressed the Newcastle Law Class of 2024 at the annual Valedictory Dinner, won the University of Newcastle Law Students'​ Association “Witness Examination” Competition, was named Australian Champion at the Australian Law Students'​ Association “Witness Examination” Competition in Hobart, competing against other finalists from across Australia and New Zealand, earned a place on the College Commendation List, and completed a year of the Paralegal/Leadership Development Program at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (NSW).
    • Keren Peter (2021 Scholar) delivered a speech on behalf of students at the Ourimbah Graduation ceremony in April, and was awarded the College of Engineering, Science and Environment Medal for Food Science. Keren secured employment as the Food Scientist and Product Development Manager with Eastcoast Beverages, a Central Coast owned company for over 60 years with a strong track record of philanthropic support for the community.
    • Sophia Scepanovic (2021 Scholar) was awarded the College of Engineering, Science and Environment Medal for achieving a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) over 85 during the course of her undergraduate studies.
    • The Ma & Morley Team including Jess Lette, Keely Dunning, Georgia Young, Hollie CrimminsMillie Mills, Claudia Holt, Jai Briggs-Ford and Cooper Ivory raised $1,468 for Lifeline in their Out of the Shadows Walk for suicide prevention.
    • Ashlee Dawson (2024 Scholar) travelled to Hong Kong with the New Colombo Plan for two weeks in November, completing the BUSN3600 International Study Experience. The group visited business and commerce related organisations, hearing professionals sharing their insights and developing their understanding of global trade, communications and operational similarities and differences of doing business in Hong Kong and Australia. A cultural tour in both urban and rural areas highlighted the rich culture of Hong Kong, which has expanded Ashlee’s global awareness and stretched her career ambitions.
    • Natalia Hogan (2024 Scholar)shared her story of overcoming homelessness and adversity through school with the Catholic Schools Maitland-Newcastle Diocese Pastoral Care workers conference and an Auoroa article.
    • Natasha Hawkshaw (2024 Scholar) made the commendation list for the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing. Natasha completed her Occupational Therapy placement  with the Broken Hill Department of Rural Health, delivering allied health care to communities in Far West NSW.
    • Sam Cox (2023 Scholar) was elected VP Marketing of the University of Newcastle Law Students Association (UNSLA), which celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2024.
    • Georgia Young (2018 Scholar) spoke at the 50 years 50 Stories exhibition opening at Ourimbah in October, which celebrated 50 years of Open Foundation and showcased many of its alumni, including Georgia and many other Ma & Morley Scholars.
    • Ashlee Dawson (2024 Scholar) attended Ideas@the House, hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales and presented by Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner.

    Ambassadors

    • Tully Humbridge participated on the University of Newcastle Alumni Panel on Leadership and Sustainability at the Singapore Alumni and Industry Symposium, reflecting on her early career stage within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as Second Secretray, Australian High Commission.
    • Renae Lamb graduatedand continued her Midnight Dreaming journey, with a dance troupe performing at Hum Newcastle and hosting workshop and stalls at the Rising from the Embers Festival at the Bar on the Hill in May and Surfest Indigenous Classic at Merewether in May.
    • Tara Tolhurst returned to the University of Newcastleto undertake her Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine, after graduating with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science in 2021
    • Sophie Welsh travelled overseas and worked for six months as a Senior Community Physiotherapist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom. Sohhie has returned to Australia and is a Rehabilitation and Acute Physiotherapist for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, based in Wollongong
    • Jarrod Sansom was awarded Stuber’s “Rockstar Rookie” for adding value to the company through a focus on productivity and performance and “Industry Influencer” Award, for being a bright representative of the Stuber brand and building his personal brand in the industry through events and social media. Jarrod was a panellist for The Base Health Common Ground event, looking at tribalism, truth and trauma on social media. Common Ground is a community to facilitate productive discussion and critical thinking about complex and controversial issues.
    • Erin Bonvino commenced her Master of Philosophy (Public Health & Behavioural Science), with her thesis “Exploring Death Literacy: What do Australians Really Know & Understand about Navigating Death & Dying” and completed the iLead Program, engaging, developing and demonstrating effective skills for leadership.
