Plastics in the pacific

The Effects of Plastic Pollution on Marine Food Webs and implications for human health

A research partnership is being established with UON and WWF Pacific, IUCN, USP, Fiji Water, SPREP. Pacific Islanders rely on a healthy marine ecosystem for their lifestyle and culture. It is estimated that 8 million tonnes of plastic pollution migrate from the land to the ocean each year, with physical impacts including reduced feeding and mobility of marine organisms leading to mortality and potential loss of biodiversity. With plastics now found in 97% of fish species in the Pacific Region, this research will determine the risk of microplastics to marine food webs and the potential human health impacts of microplastics via dietary exposure.

SPREP Division Alignment: Waste Management and Pollution Control

Through UON-SPREP partnership, EPIC conducts advanced research to underpin science-based policy in an effort to reach practical and sustainable solutions for the prevention and management of plastic pollution in the Pacific Region.
