Publication of a Sustainability Report
The University of Newcastle publishes an annual Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Progress Report, documenting activities and outcomes across all 17 goals. It gives the community a public record of sustainability in our research, teaching, campus operations and partnerships.
Annual SDG Progress Reports
The University’s 2025 SDG Progress Report is a publicly available, 44-page standalone publication covering the 2025 reporting year. Prepared by CIFAL Newcastle and University contributors, it draws on operational measures, research information, institutional data and programme outcomes.
The University has also published SDG Progress Reports for 2022, 2023 and 2024, following editions for 2019–2020 and 2021. This annual series demonstrates sustained reporting.
What the 2025 report covers
The 2025 report presents research, teaching, community outreach and campus operations across all 17 goals. It includes a five-year Impact Rankings comparison, goal-specific statistics and 2025 project examples.
The report records that CIFAL Newcastle engaged 1,949 beneficiaries through 46 activities in 2025. It also describes the Central Coast Clinical School’s reuse and recycling initiative, which avoided 728 kg of new plastic consumables. Both examples illustrate measurable University contributions.
Sustainability reporting in the University Annual Report
The University also publishes sustainability information as part of its 2025 Annual Report, covering the year ended 31 December 2025 and published in May 2026. Its sustainability chapter details environmental management, emissions and resource recovery.
In 2025, Return and Earn at Callaghan recovered 143,652 beverage containers, while furniture reuse extended the life of 279 items and diverted more than 6.6 tonnes of material from landfill. These independently reported operational results complement the standalone SDG Progress Report.
