The University of Newcastle has comprehensive Design and Build strategies supported by clear policy mechanisms to progressively upgrade our existing buildings and infrastructure to meet higher energy efficiency and environmental performance standards. These efforts are a key component of our broader commitment to environmental sustainability and align with national and international frameworks.
Our approach ensures that all refurbishment and retrofit projects are not only responsive to current energy efficiency challenges but also proactively designed to reduce environmental impact, improve building performance, and create healthier spaces for our staff, students, and visitors. Below is how we describe and implement this commitment across our campuses:

We commit to refurbishment programs and sustainability upgrades of our existing built environment, guided by our Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD) principles and tools.
