SMART
The SMART Program, delivered by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment at the University of Newcastle, is a long-running STEM outreach initiative focused on increasing early engagement for primary and high school students, especially those from low SES, Indigenous, and regional backgrounds. Since 1998, SMART has offered interactive science shows, STEM workshops, coding activities, and teacher development across NSW and Victoria.
In Q1, SMART delivered nine science shows across four schools, reaching 580 students—including 291 female (50.1%) and 26 First Nations students (4.4%). One of the key locations, Albury, is classified as inner regional, demonstrating the program’s commitment to increasing accessibility in underserved areas.
The featured show, “Force and Motion”, used fast-paced demonstrations and student participation to build excitement around science. While formal data collection is limited in these high-energy environments, anecdotal feedback from teachers and students consistently highlighted high engagement, enthusiasm, and educational impact. Teachers described students as “laughing, energised, and eager to volunteer,” and many followed up with emails noting the value of the experience beyond what’s possible in regular classrooms.
By removing cost and travel barriers, SMART brings high-quality, hands-on STEM learning directly into schools. The program continues to widen aspirations and build confidence among young learners—ensuring students from equity backgrounds experience science in a way that is both engaging and empowering.
