Building the Future of STEM: HunterWiSE Prepares to Inspire 250 Young Women
The HunterWiSE Schools Outreach Program is a targeted initiative designed to encourage female Year 8 students across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, and Lake Macquarie to explore pathways in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Over a 10-week program in Q1, students will collaborate on real-world challenges, developing technical and problem-solving skills while working in teams to create STEM-based solutions. The initiative also connects participants with female STEM professionals through mentoring and is supported by the HunterWiSE Network, which offers scholarships and professional development for women studying STEM at the University of Newcastle.
While program delivery begins in Q2, the focus of Q1, was on essential groundwork. The team successfully:
- Identified potential student cohorts;
- Established partnerships with schools;
- Secured funding and logistics;
- Prepared resources for delivery.
All intended outcomes for Q1 were achieved, with strong Expressions of Interest from schools. Up to 250 students are expected to participate—marking a notable expansion and reinforcing the value of early STEM engagement for girls. HunterWiSE continues to play a vital role in building confidence, visibility, and aspiration among young women, ensuring the next generation can see themselves in future STEM careers.
