Media statement by University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO.
Our University uses a tool to provide email security and protection for our organisation that holds external emails. Email protection is absolutely critical in maintaining our University’s cybersecurity.
When an external email is held for review, each staff member is given the option to 1) permit all emails from the sender, 2) allow once off release of individual emails from a sender or 3) block the email from the sender.
Last year, after some concerns raised from staff, we amended the email security and protection tool to hold NTEU emails to enable staff the option to release, permit or block emails. More than 85% of our staff are not members of a Union, but it is important that staff have a choice as to whether they receive these emails. We know that some of our staff want to receive NTEU emails and some do not, and we respect all of those wishes.
We have encouraged staff to reach out to their supervisor or their technology support if they need assistance with the functionality of this service.
