The University of Newcastle's renewable energy expertise is being broadcast to over 60 million people around the world as part of a new documentary series presented by American actor Dennis Quaid.

L/Prof Moghtaderi sitting in his lab at NIER, being interviewed for the ViewPoint documentary.

The documentary series (Innovative Technology Leaders Advancing Renewable Energy Storage) launched in December on the US television program FOX Business and featured Laureate Professor Behdad Moghtaderi, Director of the University's Centre for Innovative Energy Technologies.

The episode, produced by the ViewPoint Project, is expected to reach over 60 million people with placements across networks including CNBC, CNN, and the Discovery Channel.

It covers a research project between the University and LAVO, a clean technology company, to develop a renewable energy storage device. The project is supported by the Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) program, an initiative that is moving circular economy and clean energy technologies out of the lab and into global manufacturing.

A global effort to lower carbon emissions has seen a rise in renewable energy technologies as an alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based power sources. While wind and solar power technologies have shown promise as a clean energy source, their reliance on favourable weather conditions has hindered their uptake.

L/Prof Moghtaderi and his team aim to develop a low-cost, high performance, safe and sustainable green hydrogen-based energy storage solution. This will allow surplus energy from particularly sunny and windy days to be stored for use when needed, not just when generated.
