New exhibition highlights Connection, Culture and the Unborn
A new exhibition at Tamworth Regional Gallery will highlight the vibrant and inspirational work of the Gomeroi gaaynggal ArtsHealth program.
The exhibition will showcase traditional and contemporary Aboriginal artworks on the theme Connection, Culture and the Unborn.
Connection relates to the link between mothers and their unborn children, the past and the present, cultures, races and religion.
Culture is a vital part of who the Aboriginal people are. Knowledge and culture as passed on to children through language, art and storytelling.
The Unborn are the future, the way forward.
The works consist of a range of plaster cast pregnant bellies, painted by mothers-to-be, Elders and artists at the centre.
The breadth and diversity of the art on exhibition is evidence of intrinsic ties to the past – and a desire to embrace the future.
With colour schemes ranging from traditional ochre tones, to rich vibrant hues, each work is personalised and pays tribute to family, to country and to culture and the hopes and aspirations of the unborn child within.
The Gomeroi gaaynggal ArtsHealth program has been delivering education and health services to Aboriginal women in Tamworth and Walgett since 2009.
The Gomeroi gaaynggal program has its own centre with a clinical space for research, a working art studio, art gallery and outdoor spaces which include abundant veggie patches.
Under the supervision of Aunty Pearl Slater, Indigenous Elder and Artist, the women who attend the centre have the opportunity to develop their creative skills while they also learn invaluable health information.
The team of staff, investigators and supporters are passionate about improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people and empowering women to make positive life choices.
Held as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, the exhibition will be on display from June 17 – July 22 at Tamworth Regional Gallery, 466 Peel Street Tamworth.
Don’t miss the panel discussion featuring Lyniece Keogh, Jo Stead and Loretta Weatherall which will take place on Thursday July 6, at the Gallery from 5pm.
