Advanced Coal and Mineral Processes professional development course
The professional development course in Advanced Coal Preparation run by the NSW Institute for Frontier Geoscience is designed to provide an overview of advanced skills required to be a competent coal geologist operating within the work standards determined by the Australian Coal Industry.
It will run over five, 10-hour days and will include a major assignment to be completed concurrently. Work on the assignment will be done "in house" for two hours each evening (Sunday-Thursday). The course is run by experts who are members of the Australian Coal Preparation Society.

The postgraduate training course consists of at least 50 contact hours as part of the 5-day intensive, and will include a major assessable project which will be held in the evenings of Sunday to Thursday. The course commences on the afternoon of Sunday 8 September and concludes mid-afternoon on Friday 13 September.

Full course cost is $4,500 AUD (GST incl). This includes 5 nights accommodation, all catering, and transportation to and from conference facilities. This course is "residential" as it is necessary for students to participate in the ongoing evening project. This also includes annual membership to the Australian Coal Preparation Society.

Who should complete this course?
This course is part of the professional development training program for early to mid-career employees to improve and/or broaden their skill base, to become effective and efficient members a working team. The course will provide students with a detailed understanding of the science and practice of coal preparation. Topics will progress from coal characterization, through to the process design, plant management and materials handling with an emphasis on current practice.
Entry requirement is a BSc degree or three (3) years experience as a Coal Geologist in the Industry.
The 5-day intensive will include a major assessable project, done "in-house" each evening from Sunday to Thursday, plus short multiple-choice exams daily to review the day's work.
A Certificate of Attainment will be awarded for successful completion and a mark and grading will be recorded for the course.
The course is equivalent to 10 units and may be transferred to a relevant postgraduate or Masters Program at the University of Newcastle.
About the Course Convenor
Bob Jackson has over 40 years of experience in the mineral processing and coal washing industries. He has expertise in Coal Handling & Preparation Plant (CHPP) management, training and coal preparation complying with health, safety and environmental standards. In various positions within industry, Bob has established vast knowledge and experience on metallurgical control, training, plant management of several CHPPs and the commissioning and auditing of various major projects.
Since 2008 Bob Jackson has held the position of Course Director for the Advanced and General Coal Preparation Courses for the ACPS (The Australian Coal Preparation Society). In this position Bob has formulated programs and conducted numerous courses in Australia and Canada. These courses are held in high regard throughout the industry at national and international level. With his passion for education, Bob has taught close to one thousand students in this and has been responsible for the ongoing training, mentoring and development of his students.
