Children’s University Newcastle welcomes students back onto campus for our Discovery Days

Monday, 25 July 2022

Last month, Children’s University Newcastle (CU) welcomed over 1,000 students back onto our campuses to participate in On Campus Discovery Days. Partnering with 35 schools, events were held at Ourimbah, Callaghan, NUSpace and Manning Education Centre, Taree showcasing our diverse locations and facilities to students across NSW.

Children's University On Campus Days

CU engages children in learning in its broadest sense. Participating children, between 7 and 14 years, are encouraged to discover new learning experiences outside of the classroom, in their local and regional community and on campus. The children build their own learning program by engaging in extracurricular activities throughout the year, recognising that learning happens everywhere and doesn’t have to be constrained to curriculum.

On Campus Discovery Days are an integral part of the CU strategy and offer insight into what a University student might encounter during their studies. It is intended to spark early interest in tertiary study for primary school students and their support system, while highlighting the opportunities for access in higher education for these regional and remote schools.

During an On Campus Discovery Day, students participate in multiple hands on workshops across a range of disciplines within the University. Thanks to the successful cooperation of our University Colleges, facilities and the community, students were able to enjoy workshops in Animation, Music, Building and Construction and much more.

CU was also excited to welcome 26 students from Menindee Central School, who travelled over 12 hours to attend their first University campus. This school is the first remote community school to join CU, with the hopes that the program can expand and engage with more regional and remote community schools in the future.

These events are just one of many that students will participate in throughout the year and our staff are always excited to participate, one staff member saying “Children University is one of the fun aspects of work and I love being asked to be involved."
