Dr Jessica Allen receives prestigious Young Tall Poppy Award
Electrochemical engineer, Dr Jessica Allen has been recognised with a NSW 2023 Young Tall Poppy Science Award for her outstanding contribution to science communication.
The Young Tall Poppy Science Awards are run by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) to honour up-and-coming scientists who combine world-class research with a passionate commitment to communicating science.
Dr Allen is a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle in Chemical and Renewable Energy Engineering but her impact extends beyond the classroom - she provides community with leadership and refreshing hope in addressing the climate crisis. With a vast captive audience from pre-schoolers to retirees, TikTok users and Parliament House, her work in the community is making a difference in how people understand new critical technologies.
Leading the recently established Electrochemical Engineering Laboratory at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), Dr Allen works closely with industry to assist with solving emission and energy challenges.
As an Australian Research Council fellow, Dr Allen’s research into energy technology development is invaluable and spans across innovations in sustainable materials for batteries, carbon capture and use, hydrogen energy and zero emission manufacturing for green steel and aluminium.
Dr Allen officially accepted the award at a ceremony in Sydney last night.
