The University of Newcastle (UON) will release an additional 3290 offers to prospective undergraduate students through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) Main Round at 6pm this evening.

Tonight’s release brings UON’s 2017 total offers to date to 9395, a 12 per cent increase on total offers for the same period last year.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor John Germov congratulated all students who had received an offer to study at UON.

“The University of Newcastle is committed to providing more opportunities for people to succeed at university and we welcome everyone who has or will receive an offer to study with us.”

Professor Germov said that while the UAC Main Round still accounted for a large portion of UON’s offers, many applicants had already received an early offer.

“The growth of early offers and alternative pathway schemes continues to benefit our prospective students and their families by providing them with increased certainty and allowing more time to prepare for future studies.”

Professor Germov said demand from students in the region had remained strong.

“Approximately three quarters of all our offers to date have been made to students from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast. We are incredibly proud to continue to build and support strong aspiration for higher education in our region.”

UON’s most popular course this year is the Bachelor of Medical Science, attracting 12 per cent of all first preferences at the Callaghan campus, followed by Bachelor of Nursing with 10 per cent of first preferences.

There was strong interest in UON’s new Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which provides students with entrepreneurial training, alongside traditional business skills. Students embarking on this degree and other business and law programs will be among the first to study at UON’s Landmark NeW Space city campus.

“We’re particularly excited this year to be welcoming our first cohort of Business and Law students into our NeW Space education precinct, where they will benefit from an innovative ‘next generation’ university experience,” said Professor Germov.

For students yet to receive an offer or a place in their first preference, UON is hosting Advisory Days.

“Advisory Days are a great opportunity to speak to UON representatives about options for study and pathways to university, including enabling programs. Places are still available for direct admission to our Open Foundation, Newstep and Yapug enabling programs and our website has further details," said Professor Germov.
