Professor Gore is just the second academic to have been conferred a visiting professorship in the Department of Education at Oxford – the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Professor Gore said she was honoured and excited to formalise research links with Oxford, ranked first in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

“This appointment will help to facilitate high impact, collaborative research and I look forward to the opportunities this will create for my team.

“The Oxford Department of Education is highly esteemed and it’s a privilege to be joining colleagues there on a regular basis over the next few years,” Professor Gore said.

Professor Gore will also take up an advisory role to colleagues and doctoral students, annually presenting lectures and seminars on her areas of expertise, including teacher professional development and teacher education reform.

“Despite its elite reputation, the city of Oxford faces some real challenges with equity and schooling. It will be a test to adapt aspects of our Australian work to this new context,” Professor Gore said.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen congratulated Professor Gore on her appointment, stating it was wonderful recognition of the globally-relevant research being undertaken by the team.

“Appointments of this magnitude are rare, and extended to those making a remarkable contribution in their field. We look forward to seeing how this wonderful collaboration will continue to build on the momentum of the crucial work being undertaken by Professor Gore and her team,” Professor McMillen said.

Professor Gore is the first female to be awarded the Laureate Professorship at the University of Newcastle and the only social scientist to hold that position.  Professor Gore was previously Head of the University’s School of Education and is now Director of the Teachers and Teaching Research Centre. She is also Chief Editor of the international journal, Teaching and Teacher Education.
