Servants Past

Professor Haskins attended the 2018 European Social Science History Conference in Belfast being one of three panel members on a roundtable discussion centred on the idea of regulating domestic work in both historical/contemporary contexts, and colonial/non-colonial contexts.

One theme emerging from the discussion was the backflip of focus from workers’ rights in contemporary times.

Today International Labour Organisation pressures states to regulate paid domestic work in order to protect the rights of workers while, during colonial times, regulation was often centred upon limiting the rights and personal freedoms of domestic workers for the good of the nation.
