$5000 scholarship for travel costs to Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Croatia, Cyprus.

Classics and Ancient History PhD Travel Scholarship Opportunity

A new scholarship has been established to support student studying a PhD in Classics or Ancient History to increase their knowledge and understanding of the Greek and/or Roman world through experiencing the landscape, geography, culture and artefacts of the countries and regions bordering the northern Mediterranean.

The Odyssey Travel Scholarship is for $5000 to be used for travel expenses to visit one of the following destinations; sites of Greek and/or Roman inhabitation and influence in Greece, Italy, Spain, Southern France, Turkey, Croatia, Albania or Cyprus.

One of the great challenges for Australian-based students of Classics and Ancient History is the cost of travel to the sites of Greek and Roman influence and habitation. While there is much that can be learned from literary sources, visiting the places referred to in the literature provides a deeper understanding of and facilitates new insights into ancient culture, myth and history.

Professor Marguerite Johnson, Professor of Classics at The University of Newcastle is thrilled with the launch of the new scholarship.

"This new philanthropic travel scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for Higher Degree Research students enrolled at UON. This generous bursary will enable students to experience much-needed travel abroad to further their research in places such as Greece, Rome and Turkey, and to visit archaeological sites and museums."

Professor Johnson also commented on the healthy and vibrant community of HDR candidates currently enrolled in Classics and Ancient History at UON: "We have strong numbers, and students benefit from individual mentoring and cohort-building as part of the HDR journey in the discipline. The Odyssey Travel Scholarship is another coup for the HDR experience at UON and I’m not only very thankful to the benefactors but also confident that such a wonderful annual research opportunity will attract more students into the discipline.”
