The Role of Cooperatives in Sustainable Development in Asia-Pacific Countries
Ann Apps was invited to present at a workshop “The Role of Cooperatives in Sustainable Development in Asia-Pacific Countries” hosted by UNDESA in Nadi, Fiji on March 4th.
Presented her research on legal frameworks for co-operatives in Australia, NZ and South Pacific countries, Fiji, Vanuatu and Kiribati. The invitation was at the request of ICA-AP and Ann’s appointment as subregional expert for Oceanic countries in the “Cooperatives in Development – People-centred Businesses in Action”, project between the International Co-operative Alliance and the European Commission.
The 3-day workshop was chaired by Mr Andrew Allimadi, Programme Office, UNDESA. Workshop presentations were also delivered by Predrag Savic UNESCAP on the UN Asia-Pacific Strategy for Social Protection and Leaving No-one Behind and a report on Activities of Co-operatives on Sustainable Development presented by Mr Matin Karimli, Director ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries, Suva. Mr Balu Iyer and Mr Mohit Dave from ICA-Asia Pacific helped to facilitate the workshop and presented on the role of co-operatives in international development and the importance of co-operation among co-operatives in the Asia Pacific. Ann enjoyed the opportunity to develop a closer working relationship with the Co-operative Registrars in the Pacific Islands and she is currently helping them to set up an online work group to share best practice in co-operative law reform.
