Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build an electric race car, a high-powered rocket and an autonomous boat. It’s a challenge readily accepted by University of Newcastle Engineering student teams from NU Racing, NU Rocketry and NU Marine who compete in national engineering design-and-build competitions for motorsport, rocket science and autonomous maritime navigation each year.

Generous support from local industry partners boosted their efforts in 2022. Contributions by Varley, Ampcontrol, ResTech, SAFEGroup Automation, Robotic Systems, Janus Electric, and 3ME Technology added essential fuel to the program, and were matched by the Office of the Vice Chancellor up to $50,000. These industry partners have also offered placement and employment opportunities for graduating students.

The best ideas and designs remain ideas and designs without the support to develop them. We are grateful to our industry partners for contributing financial support, industry access and opportunities for our region’s rising stars in these key fields of engineering technology.”

NU Teams competes at the highest level of engineering competitions, consistently punching above their weight against teams with much larger budgets. Teams include undergraduate students studying Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace Systems, and Electrical/Electronic engineering from every year of study. Students show unmatched dedication, skill and enthusiasm while solving problems and gaining real-world experience as they prepare for their future in industry.

Funding and engagement in the 2022 program reached a 20-year high, thanks to support from industry partners, collaborators, alumni and students with a shared passion for these exciting projects.

Congratulations to NU Racing for achieving 4th place in the Australasian Formula-SAE, the best result in the 20-year history of NU Teams. The team also scored 2nd place for vehicle efficiency. Thank you to the alumni and industry partners who contributed to this outstanding result.
