Alumni and colleagues from GHD have clocked up tens of thousands of kilometres swimming, cycling and running together to raise funds for scholarships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the University of Newcastle.

Thanks to the incredible support from peers, alumni and friends, and heartfelt contributions big and small, the GHD team achieved their goals – on and off the Ironman course.

For the third year in a row, a team from GHD have pushed themselves to their limits to take on the Ironman Australia race in Port Macquarie, driven by a shared goal for more equitable access to higher education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The team, featuring University of Newcastle alumni, tested their endurance across the half and full Ironman course to raise funds for a scholarship to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who face challenges in accessing or staying at university. In support of the team's fundraising efforts, GHD Northern NSW generously matched donations, doubling the impact for students.

As an alumnus, I really believe in equitable access to higher education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This is something our GHD team really got behind. To everyone who shared our commitment to creating this scholarship, thank you so much for your support. "

Proud Kamilaroi woman and 2024 GHD Pty Ltd Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship recipient, Jasmine McCorquodale, has always had a passion for health. As a junior surfer growing up on the NSW Central Coast, she rose to the top of her sport to become Australia’s top Indigenous surfer. She says moving to Newcastle to study was daunting but the support from the team at GHD made the transition much easier.

"Receiving a scholarship from GHD has allowed me to focus on my studies and relieve my stress around finances. Community support is hugely important in Indigenous cultures so it’s reassuring to know that people believe in me and want me to succeed."
