The team of 15 community minded colleagues from GHD are well into their training to compete in the upcoming Port Macquarie IRONMAN event in May. The group, 7 of which are University of Newcastle Alum, are committed to raising funds to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarships. The Ironman is a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run.

For Michael Ulph, Technical Director - Communications & Stakeholder Engagement for GHD (Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability (2019), this is not his first foray into fundraising for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives, having previously taken part in the University’s Ikara-Flinders Ranges Challenge in 2019.

GHD has made a strong and meaningful commitment to reconciliation. This is something that we as staff feel incredibly passionate about. As an alumnus of the University myself, I believe in equitable access to higher education, it is something we as a group really wanted to support. Our aim is to raise enough funds to create a 3-year scholarship for students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds who face challenges or barriers in accessing or staying at university.”

This peer-to-peer fundraising initiative is a wonderful example of how our alumni and community, support students and research through the University to contribute to a better tomorrow for all of us.
