Senior members of the Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) secretariat (Emeritus Professor John Hearn and Associate Professor Grace Liu Flanagan) held round table discussions with the University of Newcastle’s staff with interests in Africa related research and engagement projects on 30th November 2023.

Professor Hearn and Associate Professor Flanagan were thankful for the insightful conversations and deeply touched by the quality of work and the commitment of staff (Dr Samuel Woldemariam, Dr Leila Momenzadeh, Dr Alex Spencer, A/Prof. Amy Maguire, Prof. Susan Ledger, Dr Janet Dzator, Dr Catherine Chojenta, Dr Melissa Harris and those not able to attend the round table talks due to other commitments).

The large and young population of Africa that is also hungry for higher education is demographically advantageous for education exporting advanced countries like Australia. Together with partners such as the AAUN, the University of Newcastle could strategically compete with established players on the African continent, draw steady flow of students into our educational programs and collaborate with high quality peers to solve some of the world’s greatest problems.
