Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of NSW, launched the Centre for Law and Social Justice on the 2 June 2022. Her Excellency gave an inspiring address around concepts of equity and fairness and the duty of educated persons to serve the community.

The Centre for Law and Social Justice was officially launched on June 2 2022, at the University of Newcastle's NUspace campus. Notable attendees included Mr Dennis Wilson, Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alex Zelinsky, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Human and Social Futures Professor John Fischetti, Member of Newcastle Sharon Claydon, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Newcastle, Shadow Minister for Skills & TAFE and Shadow Minister for Tertiary Education Tim Crakanthorp, President of Newcastle Law Society Gary Fox and members of the Newcastle Law School's external advisory board.

Her Excellency
the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of NSW, delivered the keynote address on social justice and the principles of fairness and access to justice. She referred to the importance of adequate funding of legal aid services and the funding of support services in rural communities. The Governor challenged law students to serve disadvantaged communities and uphold the principles of fairness and social justice.

'What there should never be, is any discrepancy in fairness, never any discrepancy in the way people have access to a basic comfort in life and basic standard of living.'

"That is why social justice should be at the heart, not only of the legal philosophy, but at the social heart of every institution, and the way every educated person then serves the community.'

As Government House does not encourage gift giving, the Centre for Law and Social Justice will be sponsoring a prize for the Indigenous Peoples, Issues and the Law course for the next five years.
