With a background in studying intelligence history, the Cold War and terrorism history, Dr. Hänni will bring to UON his expertise on non-state political violence and the history of terrorism and counterterrorism.

Dr. Hänni's current research focuses on the transnational dimensions of non-state violence. One of the aspects he is specifically interested in are the relations between states and terrorist actors in the second half of the 20th century.

Dr. Hänni also works on the outlines of a critical terrorism history, fundamentally challenging standard historicisations of terrorist violence. Previously, he has been researching the historical origins of the War on Terror and international counterterrorism cooperation.

His latest monograph, Terrorismus als Konstrukt (“Terrorism as a Construct”), was published in January 2018.

“I’m very excited about the exchanges with the scholars at the Centre for the History of Violence. A comparable conceptual cluster focusing on the history of violence in all its different forms is missing in Switzerland”, Dr. Hänni said.
