Faculty of Science researcher appointed to NSW Coastal Council
An experienced coastal scientist with a passion for environmental management, Dr Hannah Power from the School of Environmental & Life Sciences has recently been appointed as one of only seven members of the NSW Coastal Council.
The important role will see Dr Power drawing on her expertise to inform the development and implementation of coastal management programs across the state, which she says is key to future-proofing our society.
“Australia is a nation primarily located on the coastal fringe of the continent,” said Dr Power.
“We identify really strongly with the coast and most of us live very close to the coast. We also have built almost all our major cities on the coast and, as a result, have lots of infrastructure and homes located along our coastlines.”
Indeed, more than 90% Australians live within 100km of the coast, making us one of the world’s most urbanised coastal dwelling populations.
“It’s critical that we manage our coasts effectively to ensure that we’re able to continue to enjoy our coast for decades to come,” Dr Power said.
With members appointed for three year terms, Dr Power said she is excited to help shape the future of Australian coastlines.
“I’m looking forward to…working towards evidenced based science solutions to achieve the best outcomes for our coasts and coastal communities” she said.
