Experiment Fest 2025 | Where Curiosity Meets Discovery
For more than 20 years, Experiment Fest, led by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment, has given local high school students a real taste of what science looks like beyond the classroom - and this year we received over 1,580 registrations from across 57 schools who joined us for our biggest event yet!
Over two inspiring weeks, stage 6 students from as far as the Hornsby Shire through to the Upper Hunter and Mid-North Coast rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on in our university labs. From Biology to Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science to Physics, students explored real experiments directly linked to their HSC syllabus - using specialised equipment and building practical skills that boost confidence and curiosity.

Across both our Callaghan and Central Coast campuses, the energy was electric. Callaghan welcomed 1,127 registrations and Ourimbah hosted 451, with students making the most of the chance to dive into multiple disciplines - all in spaces that mirror the real research environment at University.

Adding to the experience, students heard from current University of Newcastle STEM students who shared their own journeys from high school to University. These presentations gave students a glimpse of what’s possible after Year 12 and how success in these subjects can open doors to rewarding STEM degrees and future careers.

Experiment Fest wouldn’t be possible without our incredible academic and technical staff, casual lab demonstrators, college staff and wayfinding volunteers - your enthusiasm and expertise help spark a love of STEM in our region’s young people.

A special thank you to our event sponsor Orica- not only for their generous financial support through their Community Investment Program, but also to their researchers and STEM field staff who kindly volunteered their time to join in on the lab fun, giving students real-world insights and encouragement. Their investment makes Experiment Fest bigger and better every year, helping us champion the power of education and lifelong learning.

Thank you to everyone who took part - we can’t wait to see where your curiosity takes you next!
Proudly supported by Orica’s Community Investment Program.
