TSANZ Fellowship awarded to respiratory research leader
Conjoint Professor Peter Wark has been awarded the title of Fellow of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (FThorSoc) for excellence in respiratory health research.
With a focus on respiratory and sleep medicine at the John Hunter Hospital, Peter is a senior member of the Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs and a member of the Vaccines, Immunology Viruses and Asthma research group at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).
Peter’s research interests lie in the area of infection and the impact that this has on inflammatory airways disease, with a particular interest in respiratory infections.
Among the first to demonstrate that viral infection was a common trigger for acute severe asthma in adults, Peter and his team showed that there was a direct link between viral infection and more severe acute disease.
A focus of Peter’s research is determining why patients with asthma and COPD are susceptible to infection with respiratory viruses – with the aim of finding a way to reverse this.
Widely published and respected in the field, Peter is editor of Clinical and Experimental Allergy and editor Cochrane Collaboration, UK.
The Fellowship was announced at the TSANZ AGM which took place on Saturday 25th March at 5pm at the TSANZSRS Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) in Canberra.
