Health Professionals Research Education Program [HPREP]

A series of presentations/seminars have been developed to run from March to November in 2022 - providing information and practical advice for our Clinician Researchers, Clinicians, Clinician Managers, Conjoints and Health Academics.

TOPIC 4: Using Evidence to improve the quality and value of Healthcare – the LEARNING HEALTH SYSTEM.

Learning Health Systems are a key strategy for improving value in healthcare through the leveraging of knowledge from scientific evidence, data, and practice. This HPREP session will set the scene on the Learning Health System concept and demonstrate how evidence and data can be used to drive quality improvements in health systems. It will examine the role of research, and of researchers, through contributions from esteemed Colleagues who have led or contributed to projects nationally and internationally that have supported Learning Health Systems.

Professor John Wiggers,Professorial Fellow, School of Medicine and Public Health and Director, Health Research and Translation and Population Health, Hunter New England Local Health District will set the scene via introductory remarks.

Conjoint Professor Chris Levi, Director John HunterHealth and Innovation Precinct and School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing will unpack the Learning Health System concept with real world applications and examples.

Doctor Brenda Reiss-Brennan, Principal, Mental Health Integration Implementation Science, Intermountain Healthcare, Salt Lake City, Utah and Adjunct Professor, College of Nursing, the University of Utah. Dr Reiss-Brennan is a medical anthropologist and psychiatric nurse practitioner working in primary care for over 40 years. Brenda’s presentation will reflect on Intermountain Healthcare’s (IH) adoption, diffusion and evaluation of clinical integration for mental health and medical care that has transformed primary care culture across 180 IH medical clinics and 45 non-IH community clinics throughout the United States.

Our Expert panel members: Conjoint Professor Chris Levi, Doctor Brenda Reiss-Brennan, Professor John Wiggers and Maya Smitran, Director Healthcare Improvement, Quality, Strategy and Improvement, CCLHD will then consider the question: How do Researchers engage effectively in the cycle of the Learning Health System?
