The University of Newcastle continues to be a proud supporter of the Hunter Innovation Festival and in 2018 we are pleased to host the University of Newcastle - Innovation in Action panel event.
This event brings together an esteemed panel who are innovators in their own area of expertise and will speak about their career and showcase how innovation has played a pivotal role in their field of expertise. One of the key areas of focus that will be explored is the interplay between marketing and innovation in the growth of new business, enterprise or endeavour.
The event will be facilitated by Professor Kevin Hall, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, and will be held at the University of Newcastle’s NeW Space Campus on Wednesday 9 May 2018, 6 - 7:30pm.
The panel comprises of:

Ms Jessica Koncz, Founder and Agency Director, Crave New Media
Jessica grew Crave New Media from the popular Instagram page @cravenewcastle in 2014. With a passion for hospitality, Jessica started the Instagram page as a hobby project with the goal of showcasing and supporting local cafes and restaurants. Jess soon realised that the industry lacked good education around utilising the power of social media, and so the vision behind Crave transformed. During Crave's early days Jessica acted as the brains, photographer, and sole representative for the entire Crave platform to grow into the business it is today. Jessica is a passionate and ambitious leader who is excited about what the future holds for Crave.
Mr Norman Ballard, Business Innovation and Founder, Hummingbird Electronics
Having managed and directed a number of large companies, Norman has seen the semiconductor and electrical engineering landscape through a well-focused lens. Upon moving to Australia Norman identified a need for a company to solve problems unique to Australia, its regulation and environment.
Founded in April 2008, Hummingbird Electronics has become recognised for their bespoke product development, unparalleled specialist knowledge and importantly, for quality customer service. Hummingbird’s strength lies in its ability to consult with suppliers and customers, and then deliver highly specialised and innovative products to the automotive, mining and transport industries both domestically and abroad. The company has enjoyed significant growth and recognition, and in 2014, was the recipient of the Business of the Year in the Hunter Region.
The panel discussion will be approximately one hour in duration from 6pm (doors open from 5.30pm), will be followed by drinks and canapés and the opportunity to mingle with panelists and attendees (7pm - 7.30pm). Ms Jemma Enright, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Next Milestone
Jemma has spent most of her adult life thinking about people; what inspires them, motivates their choices and stands in the way of them living their best lives.
This curiosity led her into a media and marketing career where she has worked with a host of well-known brands on communication and advertising strategies. Jemma understands the power of differentiated brand and product propositions to drive business growth.
In 2012, Jemma took her curiosity about people and problem solving into a tech startup. She co-founded and led as CEO MoneyBrilliant, a personal finance company. It grew to be a credible challenger in the financial space with an innovative technology platform, empowering people to take control of their financial lives. MoneyBrilliant was wholly acquired in February 2016 by AMP.
During this unique experience of taking a startup from idea to exit, and in her 20+ years in the advertising world, she has gained valuable wisdom. Her goal now is to work with innovative companies to help them grow and succeed. Her method is based on a laser focus on the customer and a clearly defined pathway to the next most critical milestone.
