Dr Aaron Wong: Empowering Tomorrow's Innovators Through Robotics Education

In the heart of the University of Newcastle, Dr Aaron Wong, a dedicated alumnus with a dual degree in engineering and computer science, embarked on an extraordinary journey fuelled by a passion for volunteerism.

Collaborating with colleagues from the College of Engineering, Science and Environment, Aaron co-initiated the creation of RoboCup Junior — an international robotics competition for the Hunter Region and surrounds, with a mission to ignite young minds in primary and secondary schools to the wonders of coding and problem-solving.

“We started this local event for high school students so they could actually get into STEM education earlier because starting off earlier is key to success.”

Initially employed to establish and oversee the competition, Aaron's leadership was instrumental in propelling the rapid growth of RoboCup Junior. In 2017, when funding for the project faced a setback, Aaron's commitment to the cause remained unwavering. He assumed leadership of RoboCup Junior on a voluntary basis, exemplifying his dedication to illuminating a path for a new generation of STEM enthusiasts.

“It is important for curious minds to connect and share ideas because it helps them grow and to join in and to have fun with what they’re actually doing.”

For more than a decade, Aaron volunteered countless hours and weekends, hosting workshops for students and teachers alike. By nurturing aspirations and promoting computing careers, he has mentored budding robotic enthusiasts by showcasing STEM pathways and career options in computing, IT, and coding.

“Volunteerism is extremely important; it enables us to share our knowledge and to encourage them to take a step forward.”

Aaron's impact has reached far beyond the RoboCup Junior competition. Recognising the skills and resourcing gaps within lower socioeconomic schools, he secured funding for robotic kits. These kits became stepping stones for aspiring young minds, enabling their entry into the realm of robotics.

Under Aaron’s guidance, the Hunter Region tournament impressively became the southern hemisphere's largest. Furthermore, many of his mentees in the RoboCup Junior competition, have advanced to compete at a national level.

“When I first came to uni, my eyes really opened up to all the groups that allowed me to hone in on my interests. My time at the university has positively shaped my experiences with both academics and socially. It’s allowed me to grow in many different ways. The university has shaped my world so much that it’s still a very big part of what I do.”

Dr Aaron Wong is not only an exceptional role model but also a true educator and volunteer. Opening doors of opportunity for countless young minds, his commitment to excellence, equity, and engagement in STEM education through RoboCup Junior has made him a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
