Admissions and Audition Information
If you are interested in studying Music and Performing Arts at The University of Newcastle, through the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts or the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts/Bachelor of Arts degrees, additional selection criteria apply.
The selection of applicants will be made based on their application for admission (i.e., through Newcastle University directly or via UAC) and the following:
- Completed online application form (including section 5 - written statement)
- Audition (performance)

Music application process
Current University of Newcastle students who wish to transfer into either the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts or the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts/Bachelor of Arts double degree can apply internally through the University. There is no need to apply via UAC or International Admissions, and no cost to submit your application.

Students currently completing a University of Newcastle Enabling program (Yapug, Open Foundation, Open Foundation Extended) can apply internally through the University. There is no cost to submit this application.

All candidates must complete the following requirements to be eligible for consideration for entry into the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts.

- Online submission – Open year-round.
All Candidates must complete all of the below requirements to be eligible to be considered for entry to the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts.

Additional Information for HSC (or equivalent) Students
The University of Newcastle will make early offers in the first week of September through our Early Entry Program. The final round of early offers will be made in the first week of October.
Offers through the Schools Recommendation Scheme are released through UAC in November Round 1, and ATAR-based offers will be made from December Round 2 onwards. For the latest information about UAC’s offer dates, check uac.edu.au/key-dates.
Year 12 students must submit their audition application before the advertised deadline to be considered for the relevant admission schemes and offer rounds.

Semester 2, 2025
- The deadline for online/video audition submissions for consideration for a Semester 2, 2025 offer is Sunday, 29 June 2025.
- In-person auditions are scheduled for Tuesday 10 June 2025 at the Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle NSW.
Semester 1, 2026
- The deadline for online/video audition submissions for consideration for a Semester 1, 2026 offer is Sunday, 11 January 2026.
- In-person auditions will be scheduled for November/December 2025 (exact dates to be confirmed), at the Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle NSW.
Schools Recommendation Scheme
The deadline for online/video audition submissions for consideration for an offer through the Schools Recommendation Schemeis Sunday, 12 October 2025 .
Year 12 ATAR-Based Offer Rounds
The deadline for online/video audition submissions for consideration in UAC’s main ATAR-based offer round for Year 12 students is Monday, 8 December 2025.
Semester 2, 2025
- The deadline for online/video audition submissions for consideration for a Semester 2, 2025 offer is Sunday, 6 July 2025.
- In-person auditions are scheduled for Tuesday 10 June 2025 at the Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle NSW.
Semester 1, 2026
- The deadline for online/video audition submissions for consideration for a Semester 1, 2026 offer is Sunday 7 December 2025 .
- In-person auditions will be scheduled for November/December 2025 (exact dates to be confirmed) at the Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle NSW.
Application requirements for your area of study
To be eligible for an offer to the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts or the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts/Bachelor of Arts degrees, you will need to display your abilities and interest.
The Performance Major audition requires applicants to perform two contrasting pieces of music in any style or genre, providing their own accompaniment or audio backing where necessary. Each piece should be between 3-5 minutes in duration. For face-to-face auditions, a sound playback system, (amplifiers, vocal PA, drum kit, playback) will be available in the audition room. Applicants may also audition as part of a band or ensemble, however, each applicant must complete a separate online audition application.
The Songwriting and Production Major audition requires applicants to present a portfolio of 2 creative works. The creative works may be in any musical style and could include examples of your songwriting, compositions, remixes, sound production and recording projects. Your portfolio can be presented as example recordings, scores or lyrics or performed live. For face-to-face auditions, a sound playback system, (amplifiers, vocal PA, drum kit, playback) will be available in the audition room.

To audition for the Double Major Pathways applicants should present 1 creative work and 1 performance.
Performing arts major applicants are required to submit a portfolio demonstrating your skills and experiences in the performing arts (eg examples of original creative arts performance, individual design projects such as lighting and stage designs or promotion and program material, original scripts, production photographs from shows you have been in or worked on).
Applicants from China
Applicants from China are asked to complete the following audition form and give the form to a registered education agent along with required application materials.
Will I receive the results of my audition?
Applicants who are successful in the audition will then be notified if their admission application is successful in the next available offer round for which they are eligible: UAC; Enabling Direct Admissions; Domestic Degree Transfers; International Degree Transfers or International Admissions.
Does it cost anything to submit an audition?
No! Submitting an application to audition for a music degree at the University of Newcastle is free.
Candidates must complete all the requirements to be eligible to be considered for entry to the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts or the Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts/Bachelor of Arts degrees.
