Allied Health Student Follow-up Study (AHSFUS)

Research aims and objectives

In 2011, the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health commenced a longitudinal follow-up study of the allied health students completing short-term and longer-term placements. The project targets multiple allied health disciplines: nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, speech pathology, physiotherapy, and the medical radiation science disciplines (diagnostic radiography, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine science).

AHSFUS uses both:

Quantitative methods, in the form of cross-sectional surveys of students
Qualitative methods, in the form of individual interviews with students

The aims are to investigate:

Allied health students’ experiences of their rural placement
Their graduate destinations and short-term career outcomes
