The University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health is a collaborative project between the University of Newcastle and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. Additionally, the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health has strong strategic alliances with the University of New England and Hunter New England Area Health.
The Mid North Coast has one of the fastest growing and ageing populations in NSW, with MNCLHD providing a diverse range of services to a population of about 215,000 people.
The University of Newcastle
Since its inauguration in the early 1950's, the University of Newcastle has made significant achievements. It has established itself as one of the country's top research universities and the quality of that research is recognised both in Australia and internationally. Our staff are also world leaders in problem-based learning, an approach to teaching and learning that is explained in detail elsewhere on this site. The University of Newcastle is a great place to study and an exciting place in which to teach and to carry out research.
Department of Health
The Australian Government Department of Health pursues the achievement of the portfolio outcomes in association with other agencies in the portfolio: the Health Insurance Commission, the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency, the Private Health Insurance Administration Council, the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman, the Professional Services Review Scheme, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Authority.
The University of New England
The University of New England (UNE) was the first Australian university established outside a capital city. With a history extending back to the 1920s, UNE has a well-earned reputation as one of Australia's great teaching, training and research universities. Its graduates consistently rate their experience at UNE highly, a reflection of the University's commitment to student support. More than 50,000 people now hold UNE qualifications, with many in senior positions in Australia and overseas. UNE has built up its academic profile to the point where it now has more than 500 PhD candidates, an important sign of the University's academic vigour.
Hunter New England Local Health District
The Hunter New England Local Health District was created on 1 January 2005, following the merger between Hunter, New England and the Lower Mid North Coast local government areas of Gloucester, Greater Taree City and Great Lakes.
Mid North Coast Local Heath District
Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) covers an area of 11,335 square kilometres extending from Port Macquarie Hastings Local Government Area in the south to Coffs Harbour Local Government Area in the north.
MNCLHD is a non commercial government funded health organisation that provides quality health care at public hospitals in Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo, Kempsey, Macksville, Port Macquarie and Wauchope.
There are 10 Community Health Centres in the District which are located at Bellingen, Camden Haven, Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo, Kempsey, Macksville, Port Macquarie, South West Rocks, Wauchope and Woolgoolga.
