The New Colombo Plan Call for Action 2014

The Federal government has launched the New Colombo Plan Scholarships for 2014. The government intends to start with a pilot programme in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore this year, and aims for it to be fully operational in 2015.

The University requests your assistance to identify potential scholarship candidates. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to benefit through mobility and experience and it also contributes to the University's internationalisation aspirations. We strongly encourage you and your colleagues to participate, and to promote and support the University's best and brightest students.

We recognise and appreciate the University's current level of support and commitment to internationalisation via student outbound mobility, which for 2013 provided for the mobility of 227 students across all faculties in 17 countries, being supported by AUD $370,200 in Government and Scholarships.

The New Colombo Plan Call for Action is a A$100 million, five-year programme that will offer scholarships covering the full costs of study abroad for up to 300 undergraduates for one or two semesters, with smaller subsidies for shorter programmes for many more students. The scholarships offer up to AU$67,000 for up to 1 year study for each successful applicant.

The 2014 pilot program will provide scholarship opportunities and AU$4 million in mobility grants across 4 pilot destinations of Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore, ahead of the wider roll out of the New Colombo Plan from 2015. During 2013, we had semester exchange arrangements in place for 25 students to 3 of these pilot destinations (Japan - 19 students, Hong Kong – 3 students, and Singapore- 3 students).

Where possible, the scheme will also provide internship or mentorship arrangements with businesses, NGOs or government agencies in host countries.
