More than 3,200 university students will compete in Newcastle this week at the 2014 Eastern University Games (EUG). The games will see students from New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand take part in 17 different sports over four days.

Teams from 22 university and TAFE institutions will battle it out for bragging rights, and in selected sports will vie for qualification at the Australian University Games (AUG) to be held in Sydney this September.
 
The Eastern University Games kicked off Sunday 6 July, with an Opening Ceremony at Newcastle Panthers, with entertainment including headline act Bombs Away, local Newcastle DJs and a VIP function.
 
The Games, run by Australian University Sport, is supported by Destination NSW, the City of Newcastle and the University of Newcastle and NUSport. The event moves annually, hosted by a different regional city each year.

The 2014 Australian University Championship for Surfing, will also be held in conjunction with the Eastern University Games in Newcastle, attracting over 100 student surfers from across the country. Surfing will take place at Merewether beach from Monday 7 – Wednesday 10 July.
