Pod designs pop-up in Newcastle
Newcastle's inaugural Interiors and Design festival, DESIGN + will feature pop-up pod structures designed by Architecture students from the University of Newcastle. Opening on the evening of Friday 6th September and running all day Saturday 7th September, the event will profile student's designs as part of an outdoor public gathering space offering food and refreshments.
"This event provides students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience in having their designs used by an operating business and the public," said Ramsay Awad, Senior Lecturer, School of Architecture and Built Environment.
A 'Plus pod design' competition for students in the Architecture program determined the winning design by Fransisco Carbajal as well as two highly commended entries, one by Michael Papadopoulos, the other by students Michael Hong, Emma Foster and Elise Honeyman.
"The students have benefited from this a unique opportunity to gain knowledge of new, dynamic and sustainable light weight materials; the experience of building their own project; and the satisfaction of seeing their designs in use at this dynamic event," said Mr Awad.
The students behind the three winning designs are currently working on site with tradespeople on the construction of their structures that will be inhabited by catering businesses during the festival.
All finalist submissions will be displayed at the Inaugural Pecha Kucha evening on Friday 6th with Carbajal's winning design taking centre stage as a bar at the Pecha Kucha event.
Following the festival, the winning entry will also be used in a commercial hospitality venture by Newcastle identity Chris Joannou of Silverchair fame.
