Ministers Visit University of Newcastle Tax Clinic

On Wednesday, February 21st, the University of Newcastle Tax Clinic alongside Professor Mark Hoffman (Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Vice-President) and Mr Nathan Towney (Acting Pro Vice-Chancello of the College of Human and Social Futures) received a prestigious visit from The Honourable Stephen Jones MP, Assistant Treasurer & Minister for Financial Services, alongside Ms. Sharon Claydon MP.

The Tax Clinic aims to bridge the gap in access to tax services for unrepresented and disadvantaged individuals and small businesses across the Hunter region. Spearheaded by Associate Professor Dr Mardy Chiah (Newcastle Business School) as the Academic Director, the clinic boasts a dedicated team of professionals, including tax agents and academic staff, ensuring comprehensive support for clients.

Among the core members of the Tax Clinic team are Ms. Rose Di Stefano (New, serving as the Tax Clinic Manager and Ms. Maria Fratangelo, serving as a Tax Agent. Dr. Vien Chu, a lecturer at the Newcastle Business School, contributes expertise to the clinic's operations, further enriching its offerings.

Central to the Tax Clinic's mission is its utilisation of student talent from the Newcastle Business School and Newcastle Law School, who provide assistance under the supervision of seasoned practitioners. This hands-on approach not only offers valuable experience to students but also ensures that clients receive high-quality advice and support on a wide range of tax matters.

Hon Stephen Jones and Ms. Sharon Claydon MP met with postgraduate students, Arjun Satheesh Kumar, Geeth Genesan, and Sailesh Pareek, who volunteer their time and expertise at the Tax Clinic. Their dedication underscores the spirit of collaboration and service ingrained within the institution and their contributions as student ambassadors play a pivotal role in extending the reach and impact of the clinic's services.

Associate Professor Mardy Chiah (Newcastle Business School) said ‘We are honoured that both Ministers Claydon and Jones visited our tax clinic. Our clinic staff and students benefitted substantially from this experience, and we appreciate the opportunity to share our work and stories with the ministers’.

The visit by Ministers Jones and Claydon serves as a testament to the University of Newcastle Tax Clinic's significance in addressing the needs of the Hunter region's residents and businesses.
