What a night!
Last night Australia’s inaugural Women in STEM Ambassador, and internationally-renowned astronomer and astrophysicist, Prof Lisa Harvey-Smith, concluded her national When Galaxies Collide tour with her final show at The University of Newcastle, Griffith Duncan Theatre.
Lucky overall winner student Samuel Norton, pictured with Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, was delighted to have won a meet and greet with her before the show and not only that, he also won the amazing door prize of a $1000 telescope donated by Celestron! Congratulations Samuel.
The event was very popular with many students from local schools attending, including the winners of the ‘Name a Star’ Competition.
The Faculty of Science is delighted to have engaged the interest of such an exceptional science communicator and scholar, who has worked and interacted with the likes of Brian Cox and Buzz Aldrin. Says A/Prof Peter Howley “We are excited to have been able to collaborate with Lisa in growing the nation’s appetite for Science and STEM here in the Hunter Region.”
Panellists Patrick Barry, Newcastle Astronomical Society, Lydia Macokatic, Newcastle Astronomical Society and Professor Colin Waters, Head of School Mathematical and Physical Sciences UON, took to the stage with Lisa to answer thought provoking questions posed by young students and adults in a QandA session. This was followed by Lisa engaging with guests and taking photos with a book signing at the end of the night.
Lisa told us she absolutely loved Newcastle and was very happy to be here for her show finale. What a great night!
