Visiting Research Fellowships 2013

The Faculty of Education and Arts Visiting Research Fellowship program aims to enhance international and national collaboration with scholars interested in working with any of our major research entities:

The Faculty's inaugural 2013 Visiting Research Fellowship scheme closed at the end of August 2012.  Nine applications were received, and following the Selection Panel meeting held in September, four have been approved for funding next year.

We are very pleased to announced that the FEDUA Visiting Fellows for 2013 will be:

  • Dr Colin Barr - Ave Maria University, USA (hosted by the Humanities Research Institute)
  • Dr Bruce King - University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA (hosted by ERIN)
  • Professor Paul Oslington - Australian Catholic University, Australia (hosted by the Humanities Research Institute)
  • Dr Collin Webster - University of Wollongong, Australia (hosted by the PRC in Physical Activity and Nutrition)

Applicants must demonstrate that their research falls within with one or more of the current research programmes, themes and emerging priorities supported by the Research Institutes and the PRC. To this end, they must secure the active support of one or more colleagues in these areas, who will stand as sponsors for the application. Up to four Fellowships will be awarded in 2013.

The programmes, themes and emerging priorities for 2012-2013 are:

Educational Research Institute Newcastle (ERIN)

  • Equity and Education
  • International and Comparative Education
  • Special Education
  • RHD Training and Assessment
  • Teacher Quality Learning and Professional Development

Humanities Research Institute

  • Endangered Languages - Austronesian, Papuan and Indigenous Australian
  • History of Gender and Race
  • History of Violence
  • Literary and Linguistic Computing
  • Religion in Political Life

Priority Research Centre (PRC) for Physical Activity and Nutrition

  • Obesity
  • Physical Activity and Nutrition in Schools
  • Physical Activity for Population Health

Research Institute for Social Inclusion and Wellbeing (RISIW)

  • Social Thought and Social Analysis 
  • Social Research in Energy and Resources
  • Social Work and Evidence-Based Practice

Visiting Fellows are expected to participate in the activities of the Institute or PRC, meet regularly with staff and students, make a public presentation of their research, attend relevant research seminars, lead a graduate masterclass, and avail themselves of other opportunities for scholarly exchange. 

Priority will be given to proposals that include the development of jointly authored publications. Up to four short-term visiting fellows (of between 4 and 8 weeks duration) will be offered per year. 

Visiting Fellows will be provided with an office, library, computing and Internet facilities, and the Faculty will contribute $2,500 towards the costs of travel and/or accommodation (to be booked and paid for directly by the Faculty – no payment is provided to the Visiting Fellow).

Applications for 2013 close on Friday 31 August 2012.

Applicants should submit a completed application form indicating their preferred dates, together with a CV and list of publications plus a statement of their alignment to the relevant research programme, theme or priority.

Applications will be assessed by a panel chaired by Professor John Germov, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Education and Arts and advised of the outcome no later than September 14 2012.

Selection will be based on:

  • The research standing of the applicant
  • The strategic fit between the proposed research and current research activities or interests in the host Institute or PRC
  • The opportunity for jointly authored publications

Eligibility

Applicants must have a doctoral qualification, and a track record of research and publications. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is expected of all Fellows.

International applicants should note that a visa is required to enter Australia on any non-Australian passport. Information about obtaining the appropriate visa for Visiting Academics can be found here. Responsibility for securing the correct visa, however, is the responsibility of the Fellow.
