Description
The Master of Professional Engineering (Mechanical) is designed to facilitate a broader and deeper approach to mechanical engineering which leads to a formal qualification at the Masters level. The program duration is three years full time or part time equivalent.
The program focuses on:
- Fundamental background knowledge to successfully study mechanical engineering at an advanced level.
- Advanced engineering skills and knowledge required by a practicing mechanical engineer.
- Capstone courses mechanical engineering while also completing an advanced level research program.
Graduates of this program will have the knowledge, and technical and professional attributes to provide innovative solutions to society’s needs now and into the future.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Comprehensive, theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and/or the underpinning natural and physical sciences as applicable to the engineering discipline
- Conceptual understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics and computer and information sciences which underpin the engineering discipline
- In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline
- Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
- Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline
- Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
- Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving
- Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources
- Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes
- Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects

Admission requirements
3-year (240 unit) Program
- Non-engineering Bachelor Degree with at least 20 units of study in Mathematics (especially calculus and linear algebra); and Science, as related to Mechanical Engineering AND a UON GPA of 4.5 or above.
English Language Requirements
All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy here.
- IELTS Overall Minimum: 6.5
- IELTS Sub Test Minimum: 6

Compulsory program requirements
2024 Commencing Students
Students who commenced from 2024 are required to complete 12 weeks of Industrial Experience as part of the program requirements.
Pre-2024 Commencing Students
Students who were admitted prior to 2024 in Pathway A and Pathway B are required to complete 12 weeks of Industrial Experience as part of the program requirement.
It is anticipated that some commencing students may have met the Industrial Experience requirement, as such they will be deemed to have met this requirement, provided they can submit suitable evidence, such as a statement from the employer.
As students in Pathway C will already hold a Washington Accord qualification they are exempted from this requirement.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration.
