Our campuses are a rich, bustling hive of activity where there is always something going on. University life means so much more than coming just for classes and there are a range of other facilities and services right at your finger tips to use while you are here.
Medical services
If you are unwell or need health advice we have a
bulk-billing medical centre on both our Newcastle and Central Coast campuses.
With at least nine doctors and several nurses covering both facilities you generally don't have to wait long to get an appointment.
We also have a fully-equipped pharmacy at our Newcastle campus. This pharmacy offers fast dispensing of PBS prescriptions and affordable generic medicines. They also have a wide range of vitamins, cosmetics and gifts.
9 on-campus residences with over 1700 beds
We have nine residences across our Newcastle and Central Coast campuses with space for over 1700 residents. Our Newcastle campus at Callaghan has eight residences to choose from. These are:

- West Residence
At our Central Coast campus, Blue Gum House offers 26 rooms.
Each residence has its own unique atmosphere and hosts a number of social, cultural and sporting activities. You can also select from fully-catered, semi-catered or self-catered meal options.

Help for parents
We offer opportunities for all capable students irrespective of family situations. If you are a studying parent we have a range of services to make student life easier for you:
Childcare
We have three childcare centres at Newcastle campus and one at Central Coast. All are run by KU Children's Services and are community-based centres open to the general public as well as staff and students. However the Kooinda centre at Newcastle campus is restricted to children of staff and students only.
Parenting rooms
We have several parenting rooms with facilities such as a change table, nappy disposal unit, microwave, fridge, sink and comfortable chair.
Flexible approaches
We understand that occasionally you may need to bring children to class or that the needs of children may impact your ability to study. Our Equity and Diversity unit can help you come up with possible solutions.
Bars and entertainment
There is always lots going on on campus including lunchtime performances, markets, open air cinema, pool competitions and parties and events.
If you just want to catch up and have a drink with friends, you can visit the Bar on the Hill or the Godfrey Tanner Bar at Callaghan campus.
The Bar on the Hill is an iconic live music venue in the Hunter region hosting a regular line up of big name gigs and emerging local bands. Acts in the past have included Powderfinger, Ball Park Music, Boy & Bear, Meg Mac, The Amity Affliction, Art vs. Science and Hilltop Hoods.
Restaurants and coffee shops
We have a wide range of restaurants, cafes and coffee outlets at our Newcastle, City precinct and Central Coast campuses.
There are a range of food and beverage options including Sprout Cafe, Subway, Boost, Gloria Jeans and the eatery at Ourimbah, all offering affordable choices. Our information commons in the libraries offer coffee, snacks and lunches.
World-class sporting facilities
We have various sporting facilities at both our Newcastle and Central Coast campus.
Gyms
Our gym at the Forum on Newcastle campus is state of the art. This fully equipped gym offers a cardio zone, cycle zone, strength training zone, group fitness, personal training, plus a range of group sports including badminton, volleyball and basketball with several indoor courts. This facility also offers the second highest climbing wall in Australia, as well as child minding and a café. For more information see The Forum.
At Central Coast campus we have the Ourimbah Gym Clinic. Here you can access high quality exercise equipment, complete a health screen and fitness testing or take advantage of health and fitness programming - all for free. Training sessions are available combining intervals of cardio and muscle conditioning.
Aquatic centre
We have an eight lane 50 metre indoor heated pool at the Forum on our Newcastle campus. This facility provides casual swimming and a range of aquatic fitness programs. For more information see The Forum.
Squash courts
Four squash courts are available in the Squash Pavilion at Newcastle campus.
150+ clubs and societies
Club and societies are a great way to get involved in university life and make friends while putting some extra-curricular activities on your resume. As a member you will get to attend events, volunteer or perhaps join the committee.
UON boasts over 150 clubs and societies so there is bound to be one that will appeal to you with categories of academia, sport, charity, culture and much more.

Planning your next adventure? Campus Travel are your one stop shop! They are located in the Commonwealth Bank building across from Bar on the Hill. They have exclusive deals on travel packages for students, youths and teachers as well as being open to all. They are the experts in Contiki and the lovely knowledgeable staff know all of the best budget travelling tips.

The University of Newcastle CommBank branch offers a range of free student banking options to new and existing students including; No account keeping and No withdrawal fees at all CommBank and Bankwest ATMs. Conveniently located within the Commonwealth Bank Building across from the Bar on The Hill, the branch offers features such as; cash deposit and withdrawal ATM’s, coin counting machine, iPad Netbank Kiosk and in-branch customer Wi-Fi. The Newcastle University Post Office is located in the Shortland Building. The Post Office can look after all of your mailing needs as well as PO Box hire and passport applications.

The Ourimbah Retail Hub is fully stocked with everything you need while studying. Inside you can find a range of notebooks, pens, USBs, technology, course materials and more.
This store is also home to The Shop, the University’s official merchandise store.
The School Locker

Shortland Building, Callaghan.
Opening Hours
Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm.
Located on Level 2 of the Shortland Building, The School Locker offers a range of products and services, including notebooks, stethoscopes, lab coats, keyboards, headphones and heaps more!
The School Locker is also an Apple Authorised Service Provider so students and staff can visit the store to get the best care for their Apple products, including same-day iPhone screen repair.

Campus shuttle buses
Free shuttle buses are a great way to get to and from or around campus. We have the following options available:
NUspace shuttle
If you are studying at Newcastle City campus, then you can take advantage of our free shuttle service from Callaghan campus. The shuttle makes six stops on Callaghan campus where you can hop-on or hop-off before continuing non-stop to NUspace. Find out more.
Security shuttle
The Security shuttle operates Monday – Friday from 8.00am to 4.00pm and runs a continuous loop around Callaghan campus (including Warabrook train station) before switching to an on-call service from 6.30pm to 1.00am to get you to and from class safely. The shuttle will also drop you to your car or to surrounding suburbs within a 3km radius.
At Ourimbah, the Security shuttle operates Monday – Friday from 5.00pm to 10.00pm as an on-call service. The shuttle will also pick up and drop off from Ourimbah train station upon request. Find out more.
MyUON app
All of our shuttle buses can be tracked in real time with the MyUON app. You can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play for free.
Natural setting
Our campuses at Newcastle, Central Coast and Port Macquarie are situated in beautiful bushland environments. These provide an enriched natural learning setting and a great backdrop for outdoor study
spaces.
Students taking a break from study can meet up with friends in a sunny, tree-lined space. Or students can take advantage of the wireless access to move their study outside.

Our main campuses are located in Newcastle, on the Central Coast and in Port Macquarie. We also have a key presence in Singapore, Sydney and in five regional centres in Australia. We have worked hard to create environments that strive to meet the needs of the staff and students in each distinct location.

Bike hubs
We have several bike hubs at Newcastle Callaghan campus and one at our City campus. These modern bike hubs offer:

The School Locker at Callaghan and Retail Hub at Ourimbah have your textbook and course materials covered, along with stationery, lab coats, technology and more.
